The BLS reports that the median annual salary for paralegals was $46,990 in 2012. The best-paid 10 percent in the field made $75,410, while the bottom 10 percent made approximately $29,420. The highest-paid in the profession work in the metropolitan area of Washington, D.C., and four California cities: San Francisco, San Jose, San Luis Obispo and Oakland.

Average Paralegal Pay vs. All Social Services Jobs

Paralegals sometimes have overlapping duties with lawyers, but they make far less, bringing in an average salary of $50,220. In 2012, the highest-paid 10 percent of paralegals made about $55,500 less than the average lawyer ($130,880). Paralegal salaries are modestly lower than those of some on our Best Social Service Jobs list, such as speech-language pathologists ($72,730) and middle school teachers ($56,280), and slightly higher than those of maintenance workers ($37,190) and recreation and fitness workers ($36,900).
