How to Get a Job as a Veterinary Technologist & Technician

Legred urges aspiring veterinary technologists and technicians to find a local vet tech and speak to them about their job. Since there are more than 11 specialties in the field, including clinical pathology and emergency care, jobs can vary widely. Legred says gaining strong math and science backgrounds early in one's education is key, along with cultivating passion for the job.

What is the Job Like?

Legred says the job is often misunderstood, even by veterinarians who fail to take advantage of technologists’ and technicians’ skills. “Assistants should be restraining animals, and we should be administering anesthesia, medicine, and [other higher-skilled tasks],” she says. It also requires a lot of interaction with animals’ caregivers, which can be challenging, especially when dealing with emotionally charged situations involving sick or dying pets.
