Summary

Wells Fargo Advantage Premier Large Company Growth's tech-heavy portfolio had a middling 2010.

As of May 03, 2013, the fund has assets totaling almost $2.96 billion invested in 90 different holdings. Its portfolio consists primarily of shares of large companies.

On a relative basis, one of this fund's better years was one in which it lost money. While its 29 percent loss during the 2008 downturn was painful, the fund held up substantially better than the broader market. After a solid 2009, however, the fund moved to the middle of the pack last year. An outsized position in Google was among the factors that held the fund back in 2010. Overall, management has shown a strong preference for tech names. Together, the hardware and software sectors represented, as of the end of January, roughly a quarter of this fund's stock portfolio. Management seeks out companies with dominant market positions and has placed a great deal of confidence in Apple, which as of the end of January accounted for upwards of 6 percent of its holdings. The fund has returned 5.40 percent over the past year and 11.71 percent over the past three years.

Aside from 2008, this fund hasn't spent many individual years toward the front of the pack, but overall, it has been a steady performer. As of the end of 2010, its trailing 10-year returns landed it in the top quarter of Morningstar's large-growth category. The fund has returned 8.62 percent over the past five years and 8.41 percent over the past decade.

Investment Strategy

According to the fund's prospectus: "We focus on companies that dominate their market, are establishing new markets or are undergoing dynamic change. We believe earnings and revenue growth relative to expectations are critical factors in determining stock price movements. Thus, our investment process is centered around finding companies with under-appreciated prospects for robust and sustainable growth in earnings and revenue. To find that growth, we use bottom-up research, emphasizing companies whose management teams have a history of successfully executing their strategy and whose business model has sufficient profit potential."
