Fund Holdings

The fund tends to invest in reasonably priced stocks of established companies and hold them for the long term. Among stocks, the fund relies heavily on U.S. firms; foreign holdings are capped at 12 percent of the portfolio. In one of its annual reports, long-time American Funds manager Robert O'Donnell said of the strategy, "We're looking for stocks that meet a certain quality standard. Our stocks tend to be companies with earnings or clear prospects of earnings. We seldom buy initial public offerings unless they are spinoffs from a proven, large company."
