Summary

JP Morgan Small Cap Equity brings stability to a volatile corner of the market.

As of March 05, 2014, the fund has assets totaling almost $3.37 billion invested in 91 different holdings. Its portfolio consists of shares of small companies.

This fund did a tremendous job of playing defense during the downturn. In 2008, for instance, it lost nearly 10 percentage points less than the broader market. Since then, however, its performance has been somewhat tepid. Compared to its peers, this fund has a sizeable amount of its portfolio invested in micro-caps--the smallest of the small companies. Consequently, some of the companies that it owns, such as HFF, Inc., one of its real estate holdings, are not readily recognizable. Others, including Papa John's, are household names. Another distinguishing feature is the fund's overweight to consumer goods and financial services companies. As of the end of April, those two sectors represented a joint total of upwards of 40 percent of the fund's stock holdings. The fund has returned 27.43 percent over the past year and 16.46 percent over the past three years.

Over time, this fund has put together some impressive numbers. Between 2004 and 2008, it finished each year in the top 20 percent of its Morningstar category. As of the end of May, it returned an average of 10 percent each year over the trailing 10-year period. The fund has returned 25.74 percent over the past five years and 12.49 percent over the past decade.
