These tips were nice. They will come in handy for my new blog. Driving traffic to your site is hard. I think one big thing is to just to write without much expectations for the first few months. If you can make it the first few months, then you are more likely to do this long term. You can hopefully write content rich articles in the first few months without any worries, and then worry about traffic and money once you have some content to back it up. I am just trying to do this on my blog http://www.philiplilly.com so I am still experimenting with it.

Well, while its nice to have the few 6 figure earnings in mind, blogging at the end of the day still remain as a way to express personal opinions. Its could be a mistake to move away from that & start publishing content just for the sake of making money!

And with more corporations spending money on online ads, youd probably find more advertisers in the days to come.

Cheers!

Great article- thanks for writing it! I strongly agree with the authors observations on blogging from your highest areas of passion; (which prevents writers block)... and that you need to be realistic in your expectations of ROI from blogging.

Blogging for biz works, but it's not fast, and I believe shouldn't be motivated by additional cash flow. Let it flow out of your passions, let your blogs come from the creative place of adding value to the world, instead of trying to make a buck by expanding your opt-in list.

I'm a person of faith and believe that everything happens for a reason; so if you are adding value to others just because you believe in it, you are already blessed... and because you are working out of a sincere heart the business will follow. Some people call that "the Secret", others may call it Karma, and I call it an opportunity magnet. The Master teacher said, "Give to others and it will be given back to you in greater measure," so describe it however you wish... just don't forget the basic idea that your blogging is to benefit others. When you do that- the business will follow.

I have been bloggging seriously for a couple of months now and it is very hard work as your article testifies.

I think its important to realise that at the beginning, this is a business and like any new business they rarely make money overnight (unless supported by a well known mentor as some have been).

There are lots of ways to monetise, the problem is getting to grips with each one! Its difficult enough to write interesting blog posts every day,a few articles every week and generally try and bring traffic to your site, without investigating every "opportunity" that comes your way.

I can easily imagine spending over 40 hours a week, the problem is that most people are trying to do this in conjunction with a full or part time job and thats where the time pressure originates.

I think its a question of knuckling under and keeping at it.The water pump needs to be primed to get the water and there is a lot of pumping to do at the beginning!

Another way to earn money blogging is to do so for other companies. Many companies want to put up blogs, but do not have the time to make regular posts. Instead, they hire someone to keep up with news in their industries and post to their blogs. I make a very decent living off blogging -- most of it comes from being paid to write for corporate blogs.

I have been following John Chow for a year and have watched his reported income rises hand over fist. I am impressed with his success and only wish I could make a tenth of that with my Debo Hobo dot com blog.

One must realized that there are a bevy of sources through which to make money online and as your article states one should definitely not rely solely on Google for any type of substantial revenue.

CafePress is a great way to get your logo into the hand of your readers via t-shirts and ball caps etc, and the blogger earns revenue through each sell.

Blogging in the travel niche myself has been a growing experience and I have seen some really great blogs from which I have learned a lot. Although I can only report revenue less than 2K a month, I refuse to give up because I truly do enjoy blogging.

Thanks and happy travels
