@Spencer - You should become the financial advisor to the acting community. I can see how the nature of acting, or any other artistic (non-corporate) work lends itself to more of a focus on the immediate needs. When you are working outside of that corporate umbrella there are a few more barriers to cross for a solid retirement savings effort. Doesn't mean it can't be done though, right?

I'm a 33 year old actor in NYC. The reason I started my Roth IRA last year is because I don't want to be one of those 65 year old actors living paycheck to paycheck and still relying on unemployment compensation. Most of the younger actors on Broadway that I know, aren't investing a dime. Or they might invest a little in our 401K, which is a sucky plan, but they're still blowing massive amounts of cash on new stereos and wide screens for their apartments. I try to show them compound interest calculators to tell them just how much their blown cash could be worth in 30 years... but it falls on deaf ears.

Most of my actor friends have no clue about where, how, or why to invest as early as possible. I'm thankful that I do.
