This is the stage that where we've to live simple. Do ur fruit pay off by your offspring. Human beings are the most complex animals on earth, that create the most complex mind. Be @ ease with the simple mind & live happy with contention. Whether u work or not every day is the same simple day. Let's begin with a quite pure heart to belief in God. Excellent post! Especially the points about being social and getting involved in intellectual activities make a lot of sense. And I think the earlier someone makes these a priority (i.e. before retiring) the better.

As an early retiree (<60), about the only difficulty I still have is my wife is still working, otherwise, I fit every one of your descriptions of the happy retiree. Working for non profits fulfills many of the items you mention. You work, make new friends, create larger social networks, don't have time to watch television, keeps you intellectually busy, and you are welcomed for your help, and can take time off if you want. I found it to be the ideal thing to keep you busy as you want to be in retirement. Just don't be like me and get too involved. I am finally stepping back from putting in 60 hour weeks of volunteer time. All non profits and community organizations need help.
