Retire overseas! Proposed retirement units for as low as $20,000. But first join the Organization of Foreign Nationals and Retirees in the Philippines. Visit this website: http://www.retireinthephilippines.net/.

I find I am in agreement with you in these areas. The lifestyle in the US for retirees has become much too expensive for people to be able to afford.

I find it refreshing to be reminded of these beautiful places I enjoyed some 30 yrs ago. Exciting and relaxing with wonderful, kind people. I learned my spanish among them and enjoyed my time emmersed in the culture.

I applaud Kathleen's choices. I have traveled to many of the places she recommends, and am an American ex-pat living 21 years in Puerto Vallarta. I have traveled all of Mexico extensively and would say unequivocably there is not another place with the combination of amenities and infrastructure in the country. But the fact that the big stores have been built outside of the central district allow the city to retain its Mexican flavor. And yes, the living is easy, the cost of living lower, and we have all the comforts of the US as well.

what about cheap retirement in USA? Plenty of places, whats wrong with Florida? Cathleen just trying to make money with her business of sending people away for new adventure of high crime, learning new langugage and culture and adaptation. No one speaks english in many of those countries and with no legal status is a real problem to leave. Cathleen you should calm down with your advises, you might hirt people.

Night life, shopping, hospitals, etc. are all top notch in PV. KMart, Albertson's, Sam's Club, Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. are all there!!! Not as cheap as ppl are saying, but it depends on your requirements of daily living and entertainment. You can still find $1 Coronitas and 2 for 1 drinks at bars with water views on the malecon. Not sure about the crime as I never felt like I was in danger at any time and didn't see any while I was there. I do speak fluent spanish, but many speak very good english there since it is a tourist area. All employed in the tourist field have to become certified and learn how to serve clients in the industry, by law and union laws, so the service is pretty good.

Ms. Peddicord,

Your bio says you've covered "this beat" for 25 yrs. Why, then, have you recommended many countries that are of risk for Americans? I have nothing against ex-pat retirees as my parents have retired overseas. But two of the countries you mention are on the US State Dept's list of places to be wary of traveling to and many of the other countries listed have incidences of civil unrest, demonstrations that have escalated from peaceful to violent, organized crime issues, drug trafficking issues, kidnapping, just to name a few. And a few listed are hotbeds for terrorist activities at the moment.

Maybe because my father was in the military, I was raised to be more aware of global situations and their possible implications on my safety, but I think, if you are going to advise someone about where to retire, give them the whole picture, not just the fluff.

What about buying some place instead of renting. Would like to read about this please. Living in Canada

Heidi 2:07PM April 14, 2011

Thank You!

I never thought about Puerto Vallarta! Could I rent there close to or on the beach? What about health facilities? I know this is a tough question, but is there a book about beach front properties that I could rent? I have my VA check every mo of $2700 and I really don't know where to go or if I should buy or not. I can't afford to visit and go someplace for those getaway trips that Kathleen talks

About. I like nite life and shopping and I want to live in a first class fashion but I don't want to pay or can't pay first class prices? Please help me, I gotta get out

Of here!

Thanks!

Harry
