Do they pay people to write the kind of nonsense claimed by this article ?

Take a trip to France and find the truth ! !

Maybe, I'm missing something here. How can one say that retiring in Europe, (France and/or Italy as mentioned here) is easier or cheaper THAN IN THE GOOD,OLD U.S. of A. when their currency, the Euro is MORE VALUABLE than the dollar! Maybe, the author is thinking of not "ordinary retirees" but those in the upper 5% or 10% bracket of high-income retirees. Yes, the European countries are charming, beautiful, and ahead of the U.S. in history and culture for their civilization extends thousands of years compared to the U.S.'s 300 years or something, my ADOPTED country (yes, I am a naturalized American) is still THE BEST country in the world! Counting everything else. Although I was not able to buy or build my own house in the U.S. (I have to send 5 kids to college) and living in the Philippines presently where I have a debt-free home, my heart and mind yearns for America. And this is no sentimental, mushy stuff. I love the USA, it gave me hope, it gave me a future. The Philippines is my mother country but the United States is my "wife" in a manner of speaking. God bless us all.

Great overview of some of the benefits of living in France (I'm in agreement - long-time resident myself!) One thing that you don't mention here (though you may elsewhere) is that the savings on health insurance can also be enormous, especially for older Americans with health problems. Even outside of the national health system, private insurance generally costs much, much less than in the United States - for many retirees, this can make a big difference to the bottom line!
