Veronica- That is a funny story about your uncle! And I agree with your aunt about not taking on debt for the ring, but I think sometimes extenuating circumstances (such as being in grad school) can justify a short-term credit card loan...

Thanks for posting the link to the blog post on wedding finances. I was talking to my aunt about engagement rings and she said the WORST thing to do was to go into debt for an engagement ring, because who wants to start the rest of their lives together in debt?

Additionally, when my uncle was dating his now wife and later proposed, she refused to marry him until he got out of debt. So she put him on a recommended budget and to this day still controls the finances even though he's the primary breadwinner.

While I like to play the "what if game" and imagine someday my boyfriend and I would get married, combined we owe about 160k in educational debt alone...
