I dont think there is anything wrong with spending money on something thats worth it and of course that varies from person to person. In Melissa's case it is on fine meals and traveling. There is nothing wrong with splurging and enjoying things you love once in a while. Great tips Melissa!

I could not agree with you more, Rachel. Love that dark chocolate.

I love the analogy of focused spending and dieting. I can give up a lot of other desserts and not miss them, as long as I have quality dark chocolate on occasion.

She completely understands the problem and solution.

It's not about skimping and saving every minute of your life. It's about setting priorities and figuring out what to spend your money on. Knowing how much money you have, and then intelligently deciding where to spend it and where to save it is the key to staying out of debt and enjoying life.

Lot's of great advice here and on her website!

Great post--my husband and I do very similar things with our money. It's good to know that others are thinking about spending the same way we do!

It gets tricky when our friends want to get together and eat out more often than we do, though. I've started inviting them over for dinner before the get a chance to ask :)

When I was in college, I had a disney money box. All of my cash left in my wallet before I got paid went into the box along with all of my holiday money and birthday money. Sure the Disney money box got raided at times, but it did pay for my trip to Disney world in college.

I can't put money into my savings account because it's too easy to access...and I'd be constantly transferring it. So I find a box or a piggy bank and forget it's there.

You can't find anything more important about "budgeting" to write on than somebody milking cyberspace so she can go to $150 restaurant meals?
