The Upside of Recession?

September 12, 2008 RSS Feed Print

Trend-spotter Faith Popcorn says all the financial pressure consumers are facing during this down economy is driving many of us to wilder behavior. One in five adult Americans report drinking more, 17 percent say they are smoking more, and 19 percent report increased sexual activity.

Popcorn, chief executive of her eponymous consultancy, says, "In the face of adversity, many people, especially young adults, propose to 'cut loose,' have some fun and worry about the consequences, financial or otherwise, later."

For those following that trend, an economic recovery might be something of a letdown.

Just reading the comments posted here I had to pinch myself and say ,"is this a WOW post"? It looks like stupid is wide spread regardless of excuse.

It's not so much of an upside to drop your wisdom, your self-respect, and your pants. Apart from the obvious STD issue, life does go on beyond even the worst crisis, and many of us regret the wilder/stupider behavior of our 20s when we threw caution to the wind. Just as a for-instance, I am now at much greater risk of cervical cancer thanks to the case of HPV I got in my 20s when I was going through sex partners like there was no tomorrow.

One of the up sides of age (I'm in my 40s) is wisdom, and realizing that you can survive almost anything, even in the face of collapsing financial institutes, etc. Maybe not "thrive," but "survive."
