Could the recent poll numbers have anything to do with John McCain trying to back out of the debate Friday?

Will his bid to be seen as putting his country (the bail out at our expense) above politics help his poll numbers?

Or will the people who have spent so much time and money preparing for the debate be mad as hell and not going to take it any more?
