Now that Wells Fargo appears to be the bank taking over Wachovia, will that bank take over the credit card Rewards program previously offered by Wachovia? I have had a Wachovia credit card for about 5 years, and have accumulated approx 70,000 points on its program.

It is probably better to cash out on a regular basis -- every time I've earned $100 in points on my card, I cash out. Better to have $100 now than (potentially) nothing later. It's a similar philosophy to downloading the pictures from your digital camera each time you use it; it takes a little more time, maybe, but it saves one from the potential heartbreak of lost memories.

Florida: no, there is no problem whatsoever with the safety of deposits. Even if the bank failed-- which it didn't, it was purchased by Citigroup -- the FDIC would insure up to $100,000. So those with money deposited at Wachovia have nothing to worry about.

Is there any problem with the safety of deposits in Wachovia?

This isn't the case of an orderly purchase, it was rushed, Citigroup got pieces of Wachovia, so it's hard to say what they'll do. Citigroup also bought up a lot of other debt, they might say "sorry the reward points are gone" just to reduce the exposure.

Back in the dot-com boom I had a NextCard Visa --- they were an online only bank that was handing out credit cards over the Internet. You could apply, get a new credit card number, and start using the card before you even had the physical plastic in your hands. Perhaps predictably, this strategy caused them much loss and eventually they were taken over by the government. I lost all my rewards points from them. Wachovia's obviously a different situation, but it can happen, depending on the circumstances.

I guess it might depend. I have a Disney reward card, which used to be run by MBNA America and then Chase bought it. I believe my rewards points were intact
