Whenever possible, buy local fresh vegetables & meats.

For staples, store brands such as found at Walmart cost less than comparable brand name items, but take time to read the labels of both if you have any conditions that call for avoiding certain additives.

Also, if possible, home gardens in season can pay considerable dividends in nutrition, taste and satisfaction in addition to price if you don't overdo buying equipment, commercial fertilizers, sprays, etc.

This also lends itself to home canning that is economical in the long run after the initial investment in equipment & mason jars.

Home canning also allows buying local in bulk at savings to supplement or replace home gardening.

Want to really eat better and save money?

Go to Walmart and buy nothing but items packaged in their "Great Value" house brand.

This is how you "save money".

Concentrate on the skim milk and frozen vegetables and eat A LOT of both. This is how you "eat better".
