Joan Crawford said pretty much the same thing during the Great Depression. She saw it as her duty to spend money and live in a grand manner, thereby helping the economy of the time.

Paris "ran for president" too, after McCain belittled her celebrity status in campaign ads. Go back and look at her spoof ads she ran. They made more sense than a lot of what we heard from "experts".
