The American Dream is not dead, just changing. Over the past 30 years, America solidified its place as the number one consuming country. The American Dream meant having the biggest house, the fastest car, and the flashiest attire. Over this time period people forgot what the American Dream was before the excess. The American Dream was about personal growth. In the United States you could achieve your goals. If you worked hard enough, saved, and invested you could get anything you wanted. You could invest so that you and your family could live better lives. Somewhere along the way this was forgotten. In times of extreme prosperity and unlimited credit, people became lazy and forgot what hard work meant. The American Dream was transformed into something far more superficial. With the crisis and economic turmoil of today, the American Dream is returning to its roots, trading excess-consumption and laziness for investment and hard work. I believe that there will be a rekindling of progress in America.

I want a house and a car and food to eat, a job that pays my bills and a family of my own Unfortunately It's hard to even make 10k dollars a year, I haven't been able to get a vehicle because credit is so restricted, I've lost my home because of the economy, I eat ramen noodles all the time because I can't afford anything else. Nobody will date you if your broke and you don't have a car in america you might as well be a lepar without money. The American dream is dead. Im just waiting for the apocalypse in 2012 so I can roam around the wasteland with a shotgun murdering and eating people.

huh you people think you got it bad? I'm 30 years old and still a virgin. I'm still living with my parents. I was so furious I couldn't get an entry level job in the art field, I went crawling back to Walmart and begged to get my job back three years ago. I was forced to get a used car on a loan because my old car died and I'm consistently 5 payments behind since I can only get part time work at 8.00 an hour commuting 50 miles a day. I cannot pay my college bills at all. My gas card is maxed out every month I'm just barely scraping by on those payments because gas prices are still too high. I am way too conscience wrought to even think about women and I'm suffering from severe insomnia because management's constantly coaching and terminating associates on a regular basis all around me and I've already been spoken to twice over my speed of work. Buying a house is in no way shape or form will ever be a reality for me, not unless something drastically changes and it's not. There is no money for me to go back to school with and I cannot get another loan from any bank around here.

My parents say they would help me if they could but their combined income is just enough to make their house payments and put food on the table.

Props to above... ask anyone i know and they will agree.

Also, If you can't go to college you can't be anything... and even then you'll be in debt for the rest of your life. School is too expensive and the only people that can go are minorities or rich people. therefore there is no oppourtinity for anyone who is willing to work hard. I work my a** off at shitty jobs.. and i can't go anywhere from here. living with 2 roomates and boyfriend and we all work hard and still can't make the bills.... no chance of getting out of here we've all got bad credit (mine because i have unpaid student loans) so much for the american dream. I want to get married and be a mother, but even thinking about it is insane.. cant get a home, cant even go on a date... how could i have any of those things the american dream boasts. My friends and I are hard working, intelligent, creative and talented individuals... but we waste it on corporate america making your sandwiches, pumping your gas, selling you tools, and building your transformers. W00t for america............

I've worked my butt off for the past four years since graduating, not to mention the 22 years of education. We've been saving every dime, cutting costs in every way possible, avoiding vacations, extending the life of clothing that is falling apart and... Home ownership still seems light-years away. The market has to give. Who can afford a MEDIAN home price of $350,000???
