The young people didn't vote for Obama as much as they voted against the Bush-tainted Republican Party (and against the just plain tainted Clinton). This is just like how people didn't vote for Carter as much as they voted against the Watergate-tainted Republican Party of that era.
The Republicans worked as hard as they could shoveling as hard as they could to get us in to debt. The Democrats said that was wrong--so they got a backhoe so that they could dig faster with less work.
If the Republicans are smart enough to keep the ultra-libertarian and religious wackos in line, they will do much better next time. The problem is that this is a very big IF.
