The Lowest Tax States for Retirees

The State of Hawaii does not have a sales tax. They have a General Excise Tax(GET). This tax is more like a VAT and every step of the sales is taxed - even food, drugs, medical, etc.

The calculations I read in Hawaii are if the GET were a sales tax, it would be in the neighborhood of 12%+. Almost all of these financial websites I read are wrong on this. I guess the reporters do not do enough research.

The 8.25 is only the state sales tax not including the local sales tax. It can reach up to 10.75 on some area.

As a NH resident who has also lived in MA (and NY), I do have to say that there is a tradeoff for living in NH. First, property taxes are high. Secondly, the fees are more expensive than in MA (driver's license, auto registration, etc). Thirdly, due to the lack of income, town and state services are very limited. Fourth...you will need to drive EVERYWHERE.
