That was my parents motto back in the 1960's, and that's become my motto too. Not to be taken too literally (as in a 50-50 rule) but it used to encourage me to save large percentage of my income, and certainly a much larger percentage of "found" money, like bonuses. Lately I find it encourages me to cut loose and spend some of that money, too, as I tend to be too much of a saver.
