One tip that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned: don't make too many resolutions. We all make a laundry list and don't do any of them, or do them and quit after a few days or weeks. Pick one or two of the most important. The others will follow. Those who celebrate Lent can save a resolution for later. Lent usually isn't that far away and is a great starting point as well. Again, don't over do it.

Much better as a motivator than giving money to a charity if you fail to achieve your goal is to have to give it to a cause you totally oppose. Having the charity get-out clause may actually de-motivate you: "Oh well, I didn't reach my goal but at least I gave X amount to a good cause." But the thought of giving your hard-earned money to a political or other cause you truly dislike my horrify you enough to stay on track!
