I am Gen Y as well and I definitely agree that experiences with friends and family are more important than material things.

Every celebration I find time to make a handmade card with my own message, and everyone appreciates thetime I put into it.

Hi Marie, that sounds great- if you have any specific experience gifts that might apply to others too, we'd love to hear them!

I am Gen Y and agree with a lot of these points. As far as the holidays, I have been trying to find more experience-type gifts to give people this year, and I think that will go over well. I think most of my friends and family realize, though, that gifts are not what this time of year is about.

Wow! What an encouraging article. I'm especially impressed that 2/3 of Gen Y's have an emergency fund.

Every year, I create handmade cards and other gifts that family and friends look forward every year. The rise of sites like Etsy I think are making these homemade gifts seem even more valuable considering the time and effort that goes into them. The stigma of being "cheap" is wearing off.

Look, our generation saw our parents spend their entire lives accumulating stuff only to lose it all within the course of a few months. I hope the next generation is more cognizant that a closet full of crap is just that - crap.

In the future, I hope Christmas will end up being more like Thanksgiving Day.
