As a single person with no kids, I loved my former manager because he insisted and ensured I maintain a healthy work/life balance. My coworker with kids worked from 6 to 2, and I worked the more traditional 9 to 5. There was one day I was concerned about my dog being home in 100 degree weather in an un-air conditioned condo, so he let me bring the dog into work. He would let me come in late and stay late on days where I had a social engagement close to work, but didn't want to go home just to turn around.

Happy workers are productive workers and it doesn't matter if their personal life entails a dog, a cat, a dodgeball team, parents, or kids.
