Beyond a will, it is important to consider an advanced health directive (these go by different names from state to state) and a power of attorney.

Interesting info on the Winehouse estate. It's amazing how different estate law can be between countries, even if both are common law countries. It was very surprising to me that her ex-spouse might have a right. Thank you for raising that issue.

I would reconsider putting your funeral wishes in a will. Many times, a will isn't seen until after the death and sometimes, long after decisions about the funeral need to be made. A better solution may be to put those wishes in a health care directive and share that with the people who will likely make those decisions. http://minnesotaestateplanningandprobate.blogspot.com/2011/04/being-late-to-your-own-funeral-how-to.html

Mr. Jackson was very clear about where he wanted his assets to go. He designated 40% to his children; 40% to his mother with any remainder after her death going to his chidlren; and 20% to charity. How is that any different from Ms. Winehouse leaving her estate to her parents and brother? Sounds parallel to me. Her will designates her parents and brother as beneficiaries and Mr. Jackson's is parent and chidlren along with the less fortunate. I am sorry about Amy's death - it was a senseless loss just like Michael's - but can you people never stop criticizing Michael Jackson??

Great article, Linda. Another way to minimize the chaos on your family is to leave an organized inventory of your legal, financial, digital and personal information. What do you have and where is it located? This includes where to find your will and other important documents, how to access your important online accounts, and your stories, photos and sentimental items, etc. It seems obvious, but this type of map greatly reduces expenses and stress for a family that is dealing with the loss of a loved one. Executor's Resource offers EstateLogic (www.EstateLogic.com) an online organizer that helps you do all this and more. Whether you DIY or use a service like ours, organizing your information may be one of the most important gifts you leave for your family.

I have loved Amy Winehouse's music since I first heard her in 2003. Her two albums are like being recorded by two different artists. Her second album, Back To Black, was so dynamic, I wondered if she could top it? Sure, I made jokes and called her "Amy Crackhouse" when the stories and photos hit the internet & rag magazines. But underneath my callous humor, I loved her & her music and was hoping sh'ed beat her demons and overcome her addictions. I think her real problems started with the relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. Amy went from being a clean cut jewish girl who seemed delighted when the applause came after one of her numbers, to a fake beehive & tattooed wearing, potty mouth drug & drink addict, it was like a 180 degree turn! When I heard the news I was very shocked & hurt, as I was believing she was getting her life in order, I had not seen anything in the papers lately, so I thought things were better for her. Since Saturday when I got the news, I've played Amy's music non stop. God her the talent and now the woman and the talent are both gone. I couldn't be sadder. RIP Amy Jade Winehouse Sept 14, 1983 - July 23, 2011

IT IS SO SAD TO SIT BACK AND WATCH DRUGS IN CONTROL....................HERE WAS A WOMAN GIFTED BEYOND IMAGINATION AND SHE WAS KILLED BY DRUGS AND DEMONS. WHAT A WASTE, WHAT A LOSS OF TALENT. THIS WAS NOT GOD'S WILL FOR HER TO DIE.....................HE HAD PLANS FOR HER................DRUGS TOOK HER AWAY. THE GIFT CAME FROM "HIM". HER EXTRAORIDNARY TALENT WAS GOD-GIVEN.

THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT SATAN COMES TO STEAL, KILL AND TO ROB. THIS IS SO TRUE.

THANK GOD WE HAVE A SAVIOR.....................AND I PRAY SHE IS IN HIS ARMS.
