A comment fom Frace where UNAGRAPS is anasociation that combats thediscrimination of people living alone: higher living costs, higher txes than couples without children, lower income tax exemptions for adapting the home for disabled persons living alone than for the same adaptations for a couple. Outrageous inheritance tax outside the immediate family (spouse children). Exemple: 60% if your heir is a close friend or the child of a cose friend, a godchild.... Garbage removal tax based on the size/value oft hole rather than number of inhabitants.....Higher price for hotels, travel, memberships, etc. for the single than for the couple.

Living alone has its pluses, mentioned, come and go as you please, time to yourself. Young people who choose not to have children will regret it. Living alone is not easy when you get older, and you will want to have children, someone to visit and to care about you when everyone is gone. By then most other people have their families who need them and they don't have time for single people. Holidays alone... A pet makes a big difference. Also, many older women live alone because their husband left them for younger women, men their age want to date younger women, and that means for us we have to date the men who are 70 or 80, because then we are the younger women. Do we want to? Studies show men who marry younger women die younger. Go figure. After living alone for a few years, I think marriage is better, as long as you can stand each other - make it work, stay committed, have children. I've seen so many people who have had a affairs ruin their life and their spouses' and childrens" lives for good. Better to make a good life together. Celebrate!

Having been going solo for more than 25 years, I can attest there are financial and other challenges. One is the social bias against solos. Klinenberg in his book and Bella DePaulo in her books and blogs cover the negative image -immature, selfish, etc. But, not so! To show the multi-faceted lives of solos, to inspire and inform, I've launched a new online magazine, Flying High Solo (http://www.flyinghighsolo.com). It has stories about interesting people, places, and things relevant to solos and singles and is intended to enhance our sense of community.
