a better approach is to buy things that you can afford, rather than things whose loss could, as you put it, "destroy you financially".

insurance is a numbers game to justify outrageously overpriced things, like medical and houses. its not a coincidence that govt and industry propoganda promotes buying these things and at the same time they both cause financial ruin personally and economically for the middle class.
