bs.. tunes ups are the vehicles best friends. Dont just think of the gas prices... think of your cars life span. My car has over 300,000km and it still has a long life to live. Get that $300 tuneup every few years. replace your filters and oil every 2-3 months. make sure tires are properly inflated and remove weight from the trunk to save gas. the truth is... gas sucks and cars suck it more and more. take car of your car and it will take care of you.

Changing the air filter might get 1-2mpg addition. However, if you drive HHO gas or brown gas through your air line it will burn the gasoline much more efficiently and increase your mpg by 50-60%. http://www.waterpetrolcar.com for more info on how to do this yourself.

1995 Toyota Camray--on the road (500+ mile trip) it always got 28-29 mpg. One of the engine lights came on and I ignored it on our next trip. Not only was the engine sluggish, our economy dropped to 14 mpg. I got that portion serviced and the mileage went up back to 29 mpg! I looked up the function of this gadget--it regulates the air to fuel mixture in the engine!! A major function.

Changing a clogged filter really only makes a difference on a carbureted vehicle. Today's modern fuel injected vehicles utilize technology through sensors both before and after the combustion chamber that allow the engine to "self adjust". A clogged air filter won't increase fuel consumption per se because the computer accounts for the reduced volume of air and compensates by injecting less fuel. That being said, there could be some potential performance degradation by not allowing maximum air flow at higher RPM's that a clean filter would prevent. Additionally why wouldn't you change it and reduce the risk of severe engine damage? To say that it would have an "immediate payback" is a gross exaggeration.
