What to Do if the Economy Tanks

With the Federal Government stepping into the banking business I think everyone should hide their money under the mattress. Look what the government had done with the deficit, the government, and all the social giveaways. Who would want them anywhere near their money?

My and wife and I are retired, on Social Security and with investments in Morgan Stanley. Our bank, Wachovia, holds about $25,000 of our money. Now I know there isn't much I should do with our holdings in Morgan Stanley, or should I and what about our bank account. Should I take our $25,000 and put it under the mattress? Is there anything else I should or could do?
