The repeal of the Glass=Steagall Act was a mistake which unleashed the present crisis. All the blather about the importance of unregulated markets is like a teenager's argument for driving the family car as fast as it can go to "see what it can do"!

Mr. Gramm's denials reflect a continued refusal to admit he is one of the architects of predatory subprime lending which is at the core of the current disaster.

One only needs to have a glimpse into reality:

If McCain wants to be elected, he's going to have to distance himself from the financial industry that has taken advantage of millions of people while Mr. Gramm facilitated their demise by denying there were real problems.

Robert Rubin is a director of Citigroup and "chairman of the executive committee" (apparently an 8-figure sinecure with little actual responsibility), but he isn't the chairman of the board of Citigroup. He was named chairman, briefly, in the wake of the Chuck Prince ouster, but the current chairman of the board of Citigroup is Sir Winfried Bischoff.
