Dwight Schrute and Andy Bernard: The Office Duel is like Congress

January 16, 2009 RSS Feed Print

Viewers of The Office last night saw a pretty funny duel between Dwight and Andy  to see who gets Angela. It was supposed to be hand-to-hand combat in the parking lot. But Andy, admitting he was no match physically for Dwight, used his Toyota Prius to pin his office mate to a cluster of bushes. It was a standoff.

But isn't this what happens in Congress? The minority party is able to fight above its weight because it can use its version of the Prius -- the filibuster -- to smoosh the majority against a wall and prevent certain pieces of legislation from getting passed. And right now, the GOP is the Andy Bernard Party -- a little angry and feeling betrayed by voters -- while the Democrats are Dwight Schrute -- cocky and feeling total victory is at hand. (The media is probably Michael.) We'll see if Republicans can smoosh the Dems.
