Paul Krugman declares that congressional centrists made Obama's stimulus plan "weaker and worse." He wants a much bigger, grander plan. Yet the problem for the White House and its dreams of getting huge, bipartisan majorities was that the plan was never bipartisan in substance. Lots of spending on traditional Democratic agenda items, somewhat less so a "green New Deal," and tax cuts that were really just another kind of spending. And the whole thing just never seemed very stimulating. Imagine, though, had the plan consisted of a payroll tax cuts, cuts in corporate and capital gains taxes, loans to states and local governments, and energy investment items. Something like that might have done the trick ...
