Its the way to go. You dont need to look at Ireland, just look north to Canada. Federal GST rate of 5% (ok it started at 7% and is likely still a bit low) and combined with the existing provincial taxes (PST) this adds up to around 12-13% (some provinces have harmonized their PST with the GST into a single, simplified Harmonized Sales Tax HST).

Ireland while also an ok example might not be the best place to be looking these days:

Yale law professor Michael J. Graetz estimates that a VAT of 10 to 14 percent would raise enough money to exempt families earning less than $100,000 -- about 90 percent of households -- from the income tax and would lower rates for everyone else.

The standard way to implement a VAT is to say a business owes some percentage on the price of the product minus all taxes previously paid on the good.

If VAT rates were 10%, an orange juice maker would pay 10% of the $5 per gallon price ($0.50) minus taxes previously paid by the orange farmer (maybe $0.20).

In this example, the orange juice maker would have a $0.30 tax liability. Each business has a strong incentive for its suppliers to pay their taxes, allowing VAT rates to be higher with less tax evasion than a retail sales tax.

You know that low Corporate Tax rate in Ireland that McCain keep touting during the campaign.....

This is how Ireland did it....

Evidently the tax burden is shared through the supply chain instead of at the final source.

this c*nt is from the great state of California, nearing bankrupty.

She hasn't known a tax she didn't like, a farmer that she didn't want to give water to, or a corrupt tax evader (Rangle) that she doesn't like to shake hands with

Pelosi is a typical mindless tax and spend Democrat. Like everyone else of that ilk,

she knows how to spend your money better than you do. She, Reed and Obama are

a threesome spawned in hell.

Good news is, the voters seem to be figuring that out -- so we may see the back of

them over the next three years.

Has Pelosi ever met a tax that she DIDN'T like or want?
