I am the owner of G1. I need to say it is a very nice upgrade from HTC Dash.This phone is actually nice looking but you need to judge the original phone not the display plastick fake unit. This phone has everything I need.I miss WM 6.1 but I will get used to new Android platform. Good job T Mobile and HTC /Google

If you are already a Tmobile custoer, it's $180 for essentially a little wireless laptop.
I have been a Sidekick user for as long as I can remember, the B&W was my first cellphone. I have the existing contract....well I'm not sure how the G1 charge will figure in, but I was tootling along for $70/month unlimited data and wireless.
If you love the iPhone, good for you. I found it slow to load web compared to the old Sidekick. Since that's my primary use, that's what drives me and many others.
I am a function driver person. The finger pecking on the iPhone drove me nuts.
So have fun with whatever!

2-year contracts help subsidize the cost of the device. See for yourself. Pick out a samsung, motorola, or Nokia phone at ATT or Sprint, then go to the manufacturer (samsung, motorola, or nokia) website and price it without service, a phone that Sprint sells you for $200 will cost you $400-$600 without a contract.
That's also the reason why existing T-Mobile customers who haven't finished their current contract are paying $299. We haven't finished paying off the subsidy on the last device. I ran into that when ordering my G1 on Tuesday, once I did the math and realized it was still a good deal, I went for it. I don't actually have to pay that until October or November.
Considering my T-Mo Wing I got last april didn't even have ONE GB of memory, the G1 will be an improvement, and if the buzz is true, I can use the same SD Micro card in the G1. Great because it's 2GB. Matt, it doesn't max out at 8GB, you can put any size SD Micro in the device.
Allen, I want a keyboard. I won't buy a phone without a full QWERTY anymore. I've had pocket-PCs and a touch-screen keyboard has too many problems. Until touch-screen keyboard technology can imitate the feeback you get from punching real keys, as well as the other problems with touchscreen typing, people are going to want a real keyboard.
I've been a customer with T-Mo since 2000, when they were called Voicestream. I have a tech issue once every 2 years, if that often. I've never had a billing issue, and since moving to a major city I haven't had any signal problems that were T-Mobile's fault. I was considering moving to Sprint, but looks like T-Mo has me for another 2 years.

The phone dosn't sound that exciting. Nobody wants a keyboard. Part of the iphone appeal is simplicity with the ability to function as a minnie laptop. Also buying media is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Weather a phone lets you purchase music from Amazon or itunes, is not important. File sharing ability is much more important.
Once a company makes a simple hand-held computer that can work as a phone from Wi-Fi, then people will start droping there 2 year contracts, and talk to each-other when they are within Wi-fi range.
To bad for all those cell towers...

No headphone jack / Only 4GB memory on base model or max out at 8GB / less battery life then IPhone / Can't hook up to your car (IPhone has aux input to car radio fo hands-free talk, for music & movies) / Uuuugly looking...
Sure its less money - but this seems to be a clear cut cliche of "you get what you pay for..." I cannot see how the G1 can effectively compete with the IPhone...

If you're already a T-Mobile customer be prepared to pay $299+ and the monthly data fee AND extend your contract by 2 years. What a way to treat your existing customers, T-Mobile. Nice job. Sorry, just a bit disappointed with this one....
