Free Service to Remove "Crapware"

December 10, 2008 RSS Feed Print

Many new Windows PCs come loaded with what's often called "crapware." It's all the free trial and junk programs that manufacturers get paid to include, and that junk up a new desktop and hard drive.

Support.com is offering to remove some of it for free. A tech uses remote-control software to take over the new PC and removes the "most common offenders."

I think Support's pay-for offerings are steeply priced, starting at $50 to set up wireless security on one PC. But remote services are a good way for vexed consumers to get some quick help, and this is a good way to test one.

Not sure I agree with your steeply priced comment. I've been price shopping to clean-up a PC my kids infected (have given up trying to fix it myself) and support.com looks ok compared to calling someone to come to your house. Would still love to fix it myself for free...

There's the PCdecrapifier, but I didn't find it very effective. Better to remove them individually I think.
