Report That Netflix is Throttling Streams Seems Off the Mark

An analysis suggests that Netflix is throttling its video streams to his PC, says Riyad Kalla at the Break it Down blog. He suggests Netflix has business and technical reasons for throttling PCs and not Xbox 360 users, which is the case in his experiment.

A wave of comments elsewhere suggests it's an isolated glitch. Or maybe Kalla's Internet provider is limiting the streams.

I'll add my voice to the chorus: Netfix is streaming nicely to our PC. An episode of 30 Rock that we played over the weekend hadthe best-looking Netflix stream that we've seen yet.

One more reason I'm glad I dropped Netflix. I didn't really need it at all being a subscriber and employee of DISH Network and all, but I found it was a nice add-on to my main entertainment. But between the price changes and all the confusion that was going on sealed the deal for me, even before I heard that DISH was releasing the Blockbuster Movie Pass. Not that I have Blockbuster I'm very happy with it. I get streaming to my PC's and receivers, movie and video games by mail (with the option of in-store exchanges), and 20 movie channels, all for $10 a month. It’s hard to beat that. Especially with the game rentals included, so I was not only able to cancel my Netflix, but Gamefly too and that was about 15 bucks a month by itself.

We've experienced a dramatic decline in online streaming quality. All other streaming websites continue to work fine, including those with HD content. Initially Netflix worked great. We turn over movies quickly and stream via a PC - so we would be excellent candidates for subpar service. Netflix could use throttling regionally or be testing it and thus only targeting certain users. Their company has already demonstrated their willingness to punish users who take advantage of their supposed unlimited mailings by throttling them - something they failed to admit publically for months. Why wouldn't they also start throttling online streaming? It's amazing how people are crawling out of the woodwork to once again defend this company that has a history of punishing heavy users. We believe they are throttling our connection.
