Not-so-prime-time TV
Tweet Share on Facebook September 22, 2006 Comment (24)I love my rabbit ears. There is something endearingly retro, if not so attractive, about an old-fashioned antenna on top of a TV. Especially if it's there to get cutting-edge, digital broadcasts with DVD-quality video and surround sound. All through a $20 set of rabbit ears.

Scanning online social networks to keep kids safe
Tweet Share on Facebook September 12, 2006 Comment (3)Within days last spring, the wives of Michael Edelson and Brad Weber each asked if they knew whether their kids had MySpace profiles. They didn't, which seemed a bad thing. And it seemed a business opportunity. So the longtime friends, already running another tech venture, launched BeNetSafe to monitor MySpace profiles.

An online way to track a cheating spouse--or others in the house
Tweet Share on Facebook September 11, 2006 CommentThere seems something seamy about surveillance software--something seedy about a product widely publicized as a tool for jealous spouses. So it’s notable that the makers of Spector Pro www.spectorsoft.com surveillance software are trying to clean up its image a bit.

Upload upsets
Tweet Share on Facebook September 1, 2006 Comment (25)It's fun, and maybe even useful, to surf the Web in a moving car. That's possible now with cell companies offering high-speed networks in hundreds of cities. Across one of those metro areas, the cell systems can make wireless surfing feel as fast as home broadband. But don't be fooled into thinking this is a flashy superhighway that goes both ways.

One knocked out power to more than a half-million people, including our house for nearly four days. That particular storm caught many folks by surprise, popping up seemingly out of nowhere, as they sometimes do on hot, humid days. But we were alerted it was coming.

Stability in your snapshots
Tweet Share on Facebook August 4, 2006 Comment (19)Toddlers don't sit still. That's obvious with our two young boys, their heads and hands a mere blur in too many snapshots. So when I went shopping for a new digital camera, "image stabilization" was high on my list.

Will high-def disks survive childhood?
Tweet Share on Facebook July 27, 2006 Comment (1)I sensed a haunting beauty when watching a movie the other evening. I don't remember which one exactly, because I watched parts of several as I tested a high-definition DVD player--the RCA HDV5000.

Going retro to TV with antenna
Tweet Share on Facebook July 5, 2006 Comment (3)We're cutting the cable. Our cable TV bill has crept up to $130 month, after enduring steady price hikes and ever seductive add-ons. Somehow we've let ourselves creep into the "Biggest Value Pak" from Charter cable that alone is costing us $75, before taxes. So we're jettisoning it, and we're not moving to satellite. We're going retro to broadcast TV, antenna and all.
