7 New Rules For Getting Ahead

I already knew and can agree with much except Point 1. I tire of people telling other people that they don't deserve a job. Everyone needs work...here and abroad. Good, honest work is a balm to any soul. I also don't feel that a dearth of jobs gives people carte blanche to treat people unfairly. I already see that happening and people working 20 hour days, six days a week but being paid for 4 hour days, five days a week is coming....It isn't an entitlement but a requirement for adulthood. I intend to spend a great deal of my free time finding ways to get around buying or using goods and services from people who feel that any American labor is unnecessary. It is also ridiculous to assume that people in any country should buy products and services when they can't get a job to purchase said goods and services. Why sell things to people who can't afford them?

@Eric of PA - I agree with you so much that it hurts. Unions were a decent idea back when children were chained to their machines and forced to work for 17 hours a day. They were a way for people to fight back against working conditions that were truly unfair and wrong. But now, it's gone too far. The unions got their "fair" conditions, but they wouldn't stop there - they want to go as far as they can. Now, it's almost reverse. The companies are being exploited by the workers in the same way that workers were once exploited by the companies. Pretty soon no one will want to own the business, but would rather work for one as part of a union. At that point, these whiners will look around and wonder where their jobs went. It's one thing to bite at a hand that keeps you in a cage and only feeds you a cracker once a week, but it's another thing completely to keep biting once that hand lets you out and starts giving you steaks.

This is just ignorance, the so called author whom wrote this has to be very uneducated and had to write something stupid to make the quota so he could keep his job. You dont deserve a job...is the same as saying you dont deserve to be living and taking up space on this earth. Millions of people still out of work, but easy for those to say you need an education.. but doesnt that not cost time and Money we dont have. Show me just ONE financial institution that will refinance WITHOUT ANY INCOME OR A JOB TO SUPPORT THE REFINANCING.

If I was an executive of, say, a tooth pic company, if my workers worked for years without being in a union then all the sudden a vote occurs; now they are toothpic workers of America 409. Union president comes in my office and demands a raise, cheaper benefits, and a shorter work week. My choices are a. produce less and spend more or b. shut down and move to another country where I can produce double the amount of toothpics for half the price. Hmmm....what would I do? The workers already had an inflated salary for doing mediocre work because of the minimum wage and overtime laws. Why in the heck would I pay them more to do less? This country's attitude is pi$$ poor. The government has over inflated the dollar...thanks nixon for getting rid of the gold standard...over regulated, thanks a lot for those environmental and financial laws nixon, carter, and clinton...they've worked so well. Hey if we want to follow the way of Europe, we will become Europe=High Unemployment, High Crime rates, lazy people, lack of doctors and health care workers, increased regulations that infringe on your inalienable rights, Extremely high taxes, and a itsy bitsy tiny weeeney GDP. Is that really what we want?

Living in America still offers more opportunity than many places.

We have become a nation of people who feel entitled. Pity poor us.

...The winners will be those who hustle, do more than asked, and occasionally swallow their pride.

Really?! When was the last time a hig paid executive did that?

foregin workers and outsoursing are cheap, but money isn't everything. This line of thought is driving the US down. loyalty, pride, and community will keep us going. And all of you high paid admin/senatoer etc. should think about that.

It seems to me in my 50+ years in technology that just because there is a glut of talent on the market, U.S. management feels they can hire on the cheap. These decisions are usually made by executives making 6 figures and more. Let them try to live on min. wage and see how soon their seaside summer homes and expensive cars wind up on EBAY. Pay a person a decent salary, regardless of the job. The payback in loyalty, productivity and glowing comments about the great company they work for will benifit the employer 10 fold. "You did a good job, thanks" without compensations does not pay the rent. Money still talks and B.S. still walks.

There needs to be a pause on immigration. Some immigrants are taking advantage of all the give aways, they know what to do and how to do it. They get free or low cost money, housing, food, healthcare and educations. Once they are established on the backs of hard working Americans, they bring all their family and friends to take benefits that should be for the people who are already in America. America can not afford any more handouts.
