If only you had a Valentine to share scintillating conversation about altetnative energy policy over an organic, local meal with tomorrow night. Just as there are niche dating sites for singles who love indie rock, Sean Hannity, horseback riding or Star Trek ("Love Long and Prosper"), there are options for those who would like to weed out anyone with a large carbon footprint from his or her dating pool. They're a little on the granola Birkenstock side of the spectrum, though, so make sure you check out some profiles and see if you're a good fit for the site before joining. Here are a few:
Green Singles is the most established of the sites, and actually began as a newsletter for eco-friendly singles in 1985. You can place a free listing, but have to pay $24 for three months to be able to contact any members (many of the sites work this way). The site shares five percent of its profits with environmental organizations like Greenpeace and Oxfam America. It also congratulates prospective members on being a "kindred spirit." In the success stories section of the site, one woman gushes, "he proposed in our bean patch."
Planet Earth Singles was "created for environmentalists, by environmentalists." Create a free trial membership, and take advantage of a "unique matchmaking system" based on survey results. A full membership costs $14.95 per month.
Earth Wise Singles attracts "friends of Mother Earth, organic farmers and gardeners, lovers of nature and the outdoors, and those who are concerned about human rights and world peace." Membership is $14.95 for three months.
Green Passions wants to bring tree-huggers together for people hugs, too. A quick perusal of featured profiles reveals that many people on the site are looking for a "free spirit." It's free.
Green Friends - "Where vegetarian friends and singles feel at home" - claims to be the largest green dating service, and is also the most expensive, at $29.95 a month. Members can set up blogs on the site to share their green dating experiences, and success stories.
Ethical Singles boasts members that are "green business owners, vegan vixens, organic farmers, human rights supporters, eco-warriors, pacifists and green consumers." Ethical Singles' homepage offers green talking points, in case you're not sure how to start a conversation with the object of your green online affection. The global service costs 16 euros a month, or approximately $20.66.
Date for Trees is all-enclusive - you don't have to be a vegan or freegan or any other type of -gan to sign up. Basic membership is free, but if you upgrade to a paid membership, the site donates trees through reforestation group American Forests. It's kind of like offsetting your dates.
If you're just dipping your toes in the water when it comes to being green, though, you may do better with one of the traditional dating sites - eHarmony, OK Cupid, Match.com - and just looking for someone who mentions how he or she is green in a profile.
