Laying Off the Nanny in Hard Times

The nanny either is or is not "like a member of the family". If he/she is, then he/she will be taken care of in the best and worst of times by thoughtful employers.

The ones most at risk are those hired by people who only marginally could afford such help in the first place. And those are not the people who ever thought of help as "family".
