I just came back from Mexico (San Miguel de Allende) after a month's stay. Everything was fine, felt safer there than in the U.S. Unfortunately for Mexican tourism, people will panic, and stay home. The swine flu is the only thing that would concern me.

I have a vacation booked for May 2nd, and the hotels in Playa del Carmen are not offering a refund (Hotel La Caribe). So, either I go, or I lose over $1000. This is the last time I ever pay up front for a hotel. It seemed strange when I did it (US hotels never make you up front), now I regret it. I'd rather relax on vacation than have to worry about this...

I have friends in Cancun and speak to them everyday, there are no reports of any outbreaks. I was just there a month ago and I a perfectly fine. You will love your vacation. I am even planning to travel to Cancun on May 3rd for a week and have no fear at all.

All my friends and family think my husband and are crazy for going to Cancun this week. I have been looking forward to this vacation for months and I am not afraid. I want to enjoy life and not live in fear.

I have leukemia and have a compromised immune system. I do not know how long I will live and neither does anyone else. I know that the birds are the most beautiful in the Mexican jungle. The cenotes are filled with fish the colors of the rainbow. I think if you let yourself notice how fear affects you compared to your chances of becoming ill, you can begin to understand that fears are not truth, they are only scary stories. I wish you all courage and awareness.

It does seem like much, but I applaud President Calderon for his swift and clear action in the face of adversity. Of course most Mexicans want to be free of drug wars. They are a complex issue that - as President Obama and Secretary Clinton said is best faced by both our countries. The increase in presence of the war is due to putting down a foot and saying "no more" to the cartels. We will not back down. We want the drugs off the streets.

As for the swine flu, most of the deaths were already complicated cases before the strain was discovered and the right antivirals tested. Taking Tamiflu beforehand does not help, but can create more resistant strains later on. Cancun has not had cases, and if you keep precautions you should be as safe as if you were in say, California, New York or Texas. 1500 cases in a city of more than 28 million people does not sound like a lot. Except to their families of course, and our hearts go out to them. The greatest danger of the epidemic is not the proportion of population infected, but the possibility of a pandemic with a mutated strain that might get even worse, or less virulent.

Stay healthy and safe all around the globe.
