Good article. Read grocery ads before shopping. Prepare meals at home than to buy from outside. Don't buy what you don't really need. Check your receipts after shopping. Buy fresh food.

You can be cheap and get rid of your pet, but do you want to live longer and healthier at the expense of a few dollars a month? It has been proven that pets help people live longer and are happier people because of having a pet. I for one would rather live longer and be happier with having a pet by spending a little extra money every month. What is life all about if it is being happier??? You can't take the money with you!

How is switching to store/generic brands an unusual way to save money?

How much do you think keeping a pet costs? A big bag of food and litter will cost you $30/month at most. Having a pet can also save you money on pest control, and makes staying in even more appealing.

What if you have a job in an expensive area? You'll end up spending just as much on transit or gas. There's often free food, drinks, and events in cities, that smaller, cheaper places may not have.

If someone already has kids, # 10 is unhelpful. It is financially cheaper to not have kids, but many people feel their children are priceless. What's the point of working hard and scrimping your whole life if your life is devoid of anything you wanted?

Reversion to as safety razor to shave daily is nuts... to save about 25 cents each day, the author is sacrificing 15-20 min. That is placing a value on his time of about $1 / hour. Panhandling is more profitable. As for the perceived comfort (at a cost of the extra nicks on bad mornings), one gives up something like 90 hrs per year. That is 8 days of waking hours lost each year in front of a mirror! There is a reason that the cartridge shaver took over essentially 100% of the market.

Not only good for you wallet but good for the world.

Children = more consumers.

More consumers = more waste.

Regardless of what any religion tells you..

Having children is NOT your right.

It is predicted that with the current population increase rate and water consumption rate that we have less than 10 years of fresh water left. Do you want to bring children into a world without water? People will be killing each-other over an object that you take for granted today.

Dig a hole in the ground, jump in, and wait to die.

This will result in elimination of all expenses forever. You could even have a sale of all your possessions prior to this event, so you can sit and wait for death with a giant bag of money.

To be courteous, make sure to leave the shovel by the dirt pile, so some bored passer-by can fill the hole on top of you.

I thought of another one! "Get rid of your friends/don't make friends." Friends will want to go do activities with you and activities can cost a lot of money over time. Factor how much you will spend going to a concert, a movie, or out to eat. Even think about how you have to use $$ to feed another mouth if you invite a friend over for dinner. You will also be able to downgrade your phone plan since you won't need to talk to anyone on the phone. All this and more! Think of all the savings on cards and gifts. Think of how great it will be when you have hoarded all your money for a nice, big house and get to spend time sitting alone in it clipping coupons and not have to worry about pets, children, or friends.

Hundreds of dollars per year can be found on the street in loose change? Maybe if you're diving for dollar coins in a fountain in Beverly Hills. That's not gonna happen in New York!

And get rid of your pets? The health and social benefits of having pets outweigh the financial burden in my book.

Nope, but it buys me really nice quilts to keep me warm. :)
