I am a mother of two girls, a four year old and an eight month old. I have discovered that hand me downs and garage sales are wonderful! They not only save you tons of money, but it can be an educational experience as well. My oldest daughter and I look online, go to cosignment shops, and garage sales a couple times a season. We challange each other and set limits for spending. Children grow so fast, and many clothes are barely used, if at all, that it is a shame to just throw them out. If you don't have anyone in your close circle to give hand me downs to, look around your community or donate them to a resale shop. It is great for your karma and other people's wallets!!

i think you misunderstood the article. It is about not buying New cars and @mg of ny that can happen with a brand new car. I have taken the advice of succesful people i respect that know how to build wealth and they tell me there are two rules in acquiring a vehicle never lease or buy. You should always buy a used one. of course research the vehicle first and buy from a reputable dealer and i always get the extended warranty. Im not afraid to negotiate both and i get what i can afford. The formula has served me well. Good luck.

I disagree with the comment to Never buy used cars. I have always bought used cars but I make sure they are "certified" used cars, which in many cases, gives you a warranty. I have had my latest used car for 10 years, not only because I love it, but because it has saved me so much money. I also purchased a 5 year extended warranty that covers major items, like the transmission, air conditioner, radiator, etc.. I've used it several times and it paid 100% of the cost. The warranty was $1800, however, that is much less than buying another car and making payments or spending the money on the repairs. I guess it is wise to buy from a reputable dealer also.

However selfish this may sound, never borrow tools or shop manuals to anyone other than close family members. You will soon have no tools or important records. Since mechanics, machinist, carpenter, plumber, tools etc. are very expensive everybody will assume that you are rich, when you went without out to buy them. Since no good deed goes unpunished, you will be known far and wide and just like winning the lottery, you will be taken advantage of, and hated when you finally say (no) to all. Most will have a massive bank account. Most of all, have the meanest guard dog in the universe in your shop. It takes nothing to have a half millon or more dollars in tools which you were required to purchase for your job, because any smart boss will know that you wiil take care of your own tools. I know from experience the hard way. Listen well, a good samaritin is almost always a starving samaritin, and the tool borrowers will move on to another one.

I purchased a used car that looked great have fairly good mileage about 10 yrs ago. I will never buy used again. The car at that time was purchased for 7000.00 after the 90 day warranty expired everything went wrong with this car. Axel broke, radiator leaked, front end problems. It cost me an additonal 2 thousand dollars. The last straw was when my husband had my two year old son in the back seat going to his parents home and at a major intersection the car stalled and would not start up again. My husband and child could have lost their lives that day but God was with them both. From that day forward I always buy new because life is priceless. I would rather have my car depreciate than lose my family.

Thank you for including this...but the most important part of adopting a pet instead of buying is that you are saving a life. Thousands of dogs, cats etc...are put to death everyday. Please, please adopt don't shop.

Buying used can and does save money. Buying a car that is one year old still constitutes as fairly new to me. I will never buy a car less than 5 years old, it depreciates far too much.

However buying used requires a little car knowledge. If you don't have that knowledge then pay your mechanic to check out your potential buy to see if there are any underlying problems.

You also need to take into account that there are particular cars that are more reliable than others. Maybe I have been lucky, however I have never had any major issues that haven't been simply periodic maintenance, because I have chosen cars that are reliable and are in excellent condition to begin with and have reasonably low kms (however if kms are too low for its age you are likely to have problems too as per previous poster). I have also kept up maintenance, which is one of the keys. Giving a car a service every 3000 miles and checking fluid levels regularly is important (I am female and do this all myself, it's not difficult and is much easier to do yourself on an older car).

Like a previous poster said, the payments and interest that you have to pay (that could be earning interest for you instead) is likely to cost much more than car repairs.

1. Buy a used car in great condition, relatively low kms, good motor, reputable brand/car.

2.Maintain it frequently and keep it in good condition.
