Credit Unions today have most of the features of banks including credit cards, debit cards and checking. Most credit unions today have open enrollment. i.e. you don't have to be a teacher or soldier to join. They can pay off credit cards.

Credit Unions offer lower banking fees and offer great loans by comparison to today's banks. The BIG thing for me is my credit union is not going to go off and do credit default swaps or other hinky things. Credit unions belong to the folks who have their money in them. Smart folks close their bank accounts and put their money in a credit union.

I don't work for a credit union and did not get paid to say this.

If you're having trouble with credit card debt, one option is looking into credit card consolidation. This isn't something to jump into lightly, however. It's important to get a feel for the integrity of the company you'll be working with. When I was on the ropes, I got a free consultation from http://www.creditcardconsolidation.com and it really helped me out.
