I had a similar experience while on vacation in Croatia. I had rented a small car for a day road trip and ended up damaging the passenger side mirror while maneuvering in a tight street (basically it was an alley way). I had checked with Visa prior to leaving for the trip and they said that the insurance would cover all damage to the vehicle. However, at the time, they did not tell me that certain countries in Europe were excluded from the policy and of course Croatia is one of those countries. Long story short, the damage cost me over $800. Next time I getting everything in writing.
