I'd say in today's economy the best way to earn extra income and protect yourself from an unexpected event, like being fired, etc. is to start your own online business.
I've gone through a lot of different types of businesses and investements over the years and from my experience nothign compares to an online automated business that allows you the flexibility to spend time with family and travel when you want.
Some of the items you listed could be done online, however, there's no residual meaning you have to keep doing it to keep earning income, where if you create a passive online business you do the work once and get paid over and over again. I actually have 1 income stream that's been paying more for over 2 years now and the awesome part it increases every month with no work on my part.
it's residual at its best and it's what I teach my team to do with their businesses.
