What if any options are there for getting a discount on the difference of a ticket when you have an emergency and have to get home sooner than planned? A little explanation, I was charged $800+ for the difference of my old ticket vs. my new ticket to come home early due to a medical emergency with my spouse. They waived the change fee, but $800+ is still more than I can afford, is there anything I can do to get them to reduce that?

Southwest is so overrated. Theyre not as cheap as they used to be and if they lose your luggage, it takes forever to get it back since it has to fly all around the country to get to you. Id rather fly us airways, often pay a cheaper fare, yes pay for a bag fee BUT at least i get my bag on time. And if my bag gets delayed, at least they still get it to me immediately and refund my bag fees upon request. Ill always prefer us air or any legacy carrier. Id rather pay a legacy airline and get my bags instead of not pay and not see my bags for 2 days. Btw, want to move up to an earlier flight? Southwest charges no change fee but the difference of fare which can run you up from 100 to 300 depending on how much the open seat is selling for. Us airways? $50 bucks system wide flat rate. It does not matter if theres one seat left, its 50 bucks even thought its selling online for 400. At least i know what to expect when my meetings are done early.

Fly Southwest, Jet Blue and Virgin America instead.

It boggles my mind how the airlines can continue to charge and collect 3.4 Billion a year in baggage fees and still lose over 33 million bags a year! What an awful business model and shame on them!

I actually ship my luggage each time I fly. It costs less than what the airlines charge me and I get door to door service and do not have to worry about traveling with bags and adding extra stress to my trip. I definitely recommend LugLess (lugless.com), due to price and great customer service but there are a few other options out there.

I think it would be great if the writer here did a full story on Luggage Shipping, as it is now a cost effective alternative to checking bags.
