The fact that your friend's need for a break comes at the seventh year is not insignificant. Sabbaticals (from "sabbath" - a day of rest on the seventh day) are often held in the seventh year.

One viable option that's not mentioned is working for a company that offers sabbaticals. It's a growing trend. Often the sabbaticals are paid, so salary and benefits continue while an employee gets their needed rest.
