The Evilest E-mail Sin

My boss sent me an IM an we continued to chat. At first I capitilized my sentences as he did. It was awefull, I gave up on that pretty quickly. I told him that capitilizing IMs is not appropriate and he needs to get with the times. I though business IMs would be important to captilize, but doing so makes you look stuipid, like you can't keep up with technology. What if people put up a stink when the first abbreviation with an ' came out?

I am in total agreement with the writer in regards to capitalizing in emails. One obnoxious employee at work never capitalizes - not even people's names. Talk about total disrespect!

This entire controversy could be easily solved if people simply used proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Is this really so hard to do?

The fact of the matter is sometimes, some people just do things differnly. Get over it. I find not capitilizing words a lot less formal and a lot more freiendly. It's like saying, look we're friends here no need to get all formal. It's also a lot easier to type. It really is easier not to capitilize, your typing speed goes way up. Try it. Secondly, whispering is nonsense, I just don't get the analogy.

You're not creative. You're not Cummings.

It's one of those things. I've hated those, shall we say 'non-capitalist' e-mails ever since they began. That shift key isn't so hard to press, and forming the habit is so easy. I wish everyone would figure that out!

I think the loss of capitalization is just another way we're declining as a society. There are so few people now that truly take pride in their quality of work.

And no offense to the creative cat from California - but justifying your laziness by comparing yourself to E.E. Cummings...oh, please. If you were honestly that creative, you wouldn't need to allign yourself with the lax typing practices (or genius) of others.

I rarely use them...time saved? But, I noticed I am also bad to use "....." an awful lot....Does that bother you also? Just wondering...I will work on my use of the shift key!

I find myself not reading a e-mail if a person can't even type it right. If you are a trained typest than it is so natural just to do it. There is enough lazy people in this world without adding that to it.

From the old school and proud of it.

All of this is just further evidence that etiquette, and eventually respect for others, is going down the tube. As in all walks of life you have to learn the basics before you adopt your own ways of doing things. Basic academics must be taught to our kids, both at home and in school. When these kids become adults and are armed with the basics, then they can do things the way they choose.
