Good advice. I think I've already told you that I intend to become a Professional Shmoozer for the next while, and attending conferences, professional association meetings, etc.

One thing I'd add to this list is "Set up/pursue informational interviews." Find people doing the job YOU like, or running the sort of company YOU want to work for, and ask them for 15-30 minutes of their time. They will almost always be delighted (and flattered) to tell you all about what it takes to be them..
